How Dangerous Is Feeling Pulse in Your Stomach
Feeling a pulse in the stomach can be a scary experience. People experience pulse in stomach at some point or the other, thia is known as abdominal aortic pulsating.
It is a normal condition in healthy people but for some people it may be sign of a serious condition called as abdominal aortic aneurysm or AAA.
What is an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm?
The aorta is the biggest blood vessel in the body which helps in flowing blood from the heart up to your head and down to hands, legs, arms. If the walls of the aorta swells or bulge like a balloon then this weakness is known as abdominal aortic aneurysm or AAA.
AAA doesn’t always cause issues but it may be the cause for life threatening disease.
What Causes Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm?
Well the exact cause of AAA is unknown but the below symptoms may increase the cause of AAA.
Vascular Inflammation
The inflammation within the aorta may lead to the cause of AAA but this can happen very rarely.
Aneurysm may cause harm to any of the blood vessels in the body while AAA is considered as a serious issue because of size of aorta.
Smoking
Smoking may cause many health issues, especially in this case it blocks the artery walls and make them to bulge and also increases the risk of high blood pressure.
High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure is nothing but the pressure applied to the walls of the aorta, it increases the formation of aneurysm in the abdomen.
Common sym ptoms of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm are
- You feel stiff or rigid and pulsating sensation in your abdomen which feels similar to the heart beat.
- Your feet may feel pain or discoloration on the toes.
- Loss of consciousness
- Clammy or sweaty skin
- Sudden pain in abdomen
- Increase in heart rate

How to Diagnose the problem?
This AAA can exist a long way without any symptoms so the only way to recognize is through an imaging test. This test may be performed by scanning your abdominal aorta wall.
Treating an Abdominal Aorta Aneurysm
Depending on the size of the aneurysm it can be removed by surgery. This may be done by open abdominal surgery or endovascular surgery.
While open abdominal surgery can be done to remove damaged areas of aorta but it takes longer recovery time. This surgery is necessary only if your aneurysm is very large or ruptured.
Endovascular surgery is less invasive compared to open abdominal surgery and involves using a graft to stabilize the weakened walls of aorta.
If aneurysm is small in size then it doesn’t require any surgery and it can be treated by monitoring it regularly with doctor’s prescription.
How It Can Be Prevented?
This can be prevented in many ways. Some of the things which include preventing AAA are as follows:
- Focus on your diet.
- Do regular check up if you have high blood pressure and cholesterol.
- Avoid smoking
The screening test helps in scanning your aorta from bulges; it is painless and needs to be performed only once.
